Comedy movies in theaters now:
Honk for Jesus: Save Your Soul
When a scandal of biblical proportions rocks a Southern Baptist Mega Church, it’s up to Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown) and his wife, Trinity Childs (Regina Hall) to rebuild their congregation from the ground up. Together they enlist the help of a documentary film crew and spare no expense to rebuild the church and see them come out on top, right where they belong. While this film sets itself up as a comedy movie, there’s darker secrets and reflection below the surface.
In a review on NPR, Justin Chang says “As satire, Honk for Jesus is both blunt and broad — but then, as the movie shows us, so is the megachurch tradition it’s skewering. And while Adamma Ebo certainly pokes fun at her protagonists, she never denies them their humanity.”
Finally saw Honk for Jesus Save your soul. Wow. So fascinating and dark and I loved it. Amazing acting by Regina and Sterling.

Funny Pages
Everyone has a dream, a deep desire to find their true purpose in life. Whether or not they find that purpose is dependent entirely on how they decide to seek that purpose. Do they take the path of least resistance and do things the conventional way, the way that everyone else does? Or, do they carve their own path and do it the way that makes sense to them?
In this deep coming-of-age film, Robert (Daniel Zolghadri) decides that the only way to make his dream of becoming a great cartoonist is to drop out of high school and move to Trenton to pursue his dream. On his path he meets Wallace (Matthew Mayer), a professional cartoonist himself, and the pair form an unusual friendship, each learning from the other. Prepare to laugh your butt off with this film filled with heart and soul. In a review by Katie Walsh from The Wrap, she concludes that “Funny Pages is still a bracing example of a singular, and distinctive, new voice, that one can’t help but love it, grody toenails and all.”
i’m five minutes into @A24’s new movie FUNNY PAGES via their screening room and can already tell it’s gonna be a fucking masterpiece.

Spin Me Round
Italia, or Italy as we know it, is home to Venice and its many canals, Rome and its colosseum, and Florence and its architecture, museums and renaissance. However, for one lucky company woman, it is about to become home to the adventure of her life. When Amber (Allison Brie) wins an all-expense paid trip to Florence to her restaurant chain’s legendary institute, she meets the company’s CEO/owner, who takes her on a whirlwind adventure extravaganza. Will she find love in Italy?
In a review on NYTimes.com, Amy Nicholson says, “‘Spin Me Round,’ directed by Jeff Baena, is a kooky romp where unworldly travelers trip over their own fantasies of Europe. It follows the misadventures of Amber (Alison Brie), the manager of a chain spaghetti restaurant who has tasted so little of life that her dreams are an endless sea of factory-made Alfredo sauce.
Watched #SpinMeRound last night and really enjoyed it. Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza in the same movie is a winning proposition. And loved the sly, female centered deconstruction of romance tropes.

Bullet Train
Bullet Train is the latest film starring the master of trades Brad Pitt, a.k.a. Ladybug. Join him as he travels at break-neck speeds on Japan’s bullet train while trying to obtain a briefcase. However, what he believes to be a simple mission, one that he plans on making his last, he finds that he isn’t the only person after the case. This release might be full of blood and violence, but it’s a comedy movie filled with dry humor at its core.
Now, in a race against time, Ladybug must kick, punch and all around fight his way through a train full of assassins in an effort to complete his mission and move on with his life. In a review on Ready Steady Cut, M.N. Miller says Bullet Train is, “an action-packed, bloody thrill ride that satisfies anyone’s craving for mindless theatrical big studio fun. The cast is star-studded — the big-name cameos are plentiful and that’s a subplot in itself.” We couldn’t agree more.
Just watched Bullet Train; it was so good! So entertaining and well done!! If you still can watch it in theatres, do it! I totally recommend it! pic.twitter.com/G1KAEkzFJw

Bodies Bodies Bodies
We’ve all had that group of friends that love to through dinner parties and murder mystery games. However, for this group of 20 somethings, the mansion party they had planned during a hurricane is about to take a horrific turn for the worse. Paste Magazine’s Aurora Amidon says it best, “Bodies is everything it sets out to be. It’s a romp of a good time, stylized with big bold title cards and a soundtrack of club-hits like it’s The Bling Ring’s bloody cousin. It boasts a clever conceit and mostly effective execution, while also offering a refreshing take on the murder mystery.”
just watched #BodiesBodiesBodies! Such a chaotic movie and a brilliant whodunit pic.twitter.com/7w22ZDV4Uu

DC League of Super-Pets
Superman’s dog, Krypto (Dwayne Johnson), teams up with a group of lovable pets with superpowers in this animated adventure for all ages. When evil mastermind Lex Luthor captures the Justice League, Krypto must enlist the help of a hound, pig, turtle, and squirrel to save the day. The voice cast also includes Kevin Hart, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, John Krasinski, Kate McKinnon, and Keanu Reeves. Nell Minow from rogerebert.com says DC League of Super-Pets is “A high-concept animated film about animals with superpowers is brought to vibrant, endearing life by the superpowers behind the scenes: lively voice talent from an all-star cast, a script that is smart, exciting, and very funny, and, above all, the ability to tap into one of humanity’s deepest emotions, our love for our pets and theirs for us.”
DC League of Super-Pets turn out to be WAY better than what many people had thought.
It’s easily one of the funniest animated movies of the year and the movie may feel box-standard, but the sharp writing and solid animation makes up for the terrible marketing… pic.twitter.com/vR0m3KiYVE

See How They Run
Following in the vein of some of the greatest Whodunit films of the past, like Clue (1985), or Knives Out (2019), See How They Run sees a group of strangers brought together to make a film based on a popular play. Suddenly they find themselves locked in a theater when one of the cast is mysteriously killed. The race is now on for the famed Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and the overzealous Rookie Stalker (Saiorse Ronan) to solve the case before the entire cast is picked off one by one. Soren Andersen from seattletimes.com says that “The pace is quick. The interweaving of actual “Mousetrap” period history and fictional elements is deft. And the settings, many of them filmed in actual West End theaters that were closed during the pandemic, are elegant.
SEE HOW THEY RUN is a fun whodunit that pays tribute to the very genre it belongs to. The dry humor works well with an all-around strong ensemble with Ronan, Brody, Rockwell, and Oyelowo being the MVPs. An easy recommendation for a fun time in the theater! #SeeHowTheyRun #Review pic.twitter.com/cbL4K6574m

Confess, Fletch (September 16)
Confess, Fletch is a comedy film following Fletch (Jon Hamm), who somehow becomes the prime suspect in a series of murders. The only way he can prove his innocence is to put his detective skills to the test and find who the real killer is. Jon Hamm can succeed in a comedy movie in his own right, and we can’t wait to see him do it.
Embargo’s up on CONFESS, FLETCH: I loved it! A different beast than the Chevy Chase version(s), for sure, but very very funny in its own right and highly faithful to the source material. Jon Hamm gives excellent Fletch, Kyle MacLachlan very nearly steals the show. Hard recommend!

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
The beloved novel follows a 1950’s widowed cleaning lady Ada Harris (Lesley Manville), who adventures to Paris after falling in love with a couture Dior dress. She tells herself that she needs to have it, and is prepared to go to great lengths to get one, even if it means traveling from London to Paris. Along the way, she meets exciting characters like Claudine (Isabelle Huppert), Archie (Jason Isaacs), and many more. Now playing in select theaters. According to Collider writer Ross Bonaime, “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is a quiet delight, a perfect summer interlude that exudes beauty, optimism and charm in every scene. Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris feels like capturing joy in a bottle.”
MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS is the low-stakes feel good movie of the summer. A working class war widow goes to Paris to buy a Dior dress, changing the lives of everyone she meets along the way. Fucking adorable in all the ways you want a comfort food movie to be. Highly Recommended pic.twitter.com/qfbByr2Mec

Thor: Love and Thunder
Chris Hemsworth returns as our lovable himbo hero in Thor: Love and Thunder. While Thor has retired from the hero business, a god-killing villain, Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), ropes him back into crime-fighting. With help from his ex-girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman), king Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and gladiator Korg (Taika Waititi), will Thor be able to defeat Gorr and save humanity?
This film is rated PG-13, so it might not be suitable for younger kids due to some violence and mature themes. Ben Travis from EmpireOnline.com says “Thor: Love And Thunder — Taika Waititi’s iridescent follow-up to the irreverent Ragnarok — is a giddy, gleaming guitar solo of a movie; a celebratory blast of colour, energy and emotion. It even has a guitar solo — opening with a shredding, squealing, Wyld Stallyns-style version of the Marvel Studios fanfare.” We absolutely have to agree here.
I will never understand why Thor Love and Thunder got a bad reaction from the audience. Its such a great movie.

Minions: The Rise of Gru
Gru (Steve Carell) and his rag-tag team of minions return in this prequel-style film, Minions: The Rise of Gru. The movie follows a young Gru as he tries to join a supervillain group the Vicious 6. When the interview goes poorly, Gru goes on the run, with the minions by his side.
This story shares how he came to be the best supervillain he is today. Peter Debruge of Variety calls the film “a delightfully silly sequel.” It’ll be a comedy for the whole family to enjoy! The Guardians Wendy Ide says “The try-out doesn’t quite go to plan, but Gru’s nascent supervillain instincts kick in and he out-bad-guys the bad guys. The film’s approach is a near-relentless barrage of sight gags, puns and effervescent cartoon violence; the result is exhausting but extremely funny.” So true Wendy, so true. This film sets apart from all other comedy movies for its light-hearted fun, and heart-filled plot.
learned that my niece went to her first movie in a theater ever yesterday. Minions: The Rise of Gru 🥲

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
From the short film of the same name by director Dean Fleischer-Camp, and in conjunction with American independent entertainment company A24 Studio, comes the story of a mollusk named Marcel (Jenny Slate) and his search for the family he hasn’t seen in… two years? Now, with the blessing of Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini), his grandmother, and fellow 60 Minutes fan, he joins Dean (director Dean Fleischer-Camp) on the adventure of his life as he goes out in search of the community and family he so desires.
So, grab your kids and head to a theater near you for an adventure you won’t soon forget. Eric Eisenberg from cinemablend.com says that Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is “a touching and hypnotizing cinematic work that has been made with extraordinary craft – seamlessly blending documentary-style cinematography and the delicate and beautiful art of stop-motion animation. It’s a small, intimate, independent movie, but one with spectacular, massive ambition and a gorgeous soul.”
Listen. I’m saying this in complete seriousness, if you haven’t seen Marcel The Shell With Shoes On PLEASE, please go watch it now or as soon as possible because it might be the most important movie ever made. This was so freaking adorable and heartwarming in undescribable ways. pic.twitter.com/yciSrJvd4I

Comedy movies coming to theaters in 2022
Bros
From Billy Eichner, the first openly gay man to co-write, and star in, a major motion picture about two gay men, comes the first film to feature an almost entirely LGBTQIA+ cast, Bros.. The movie centers on two men, Bobby Leiber (Billy Eichner), and Aaron (Luke MacFarlane), as they travel through life in New York in search of love. Or perhaps they would just be happier staying single. Love is Love is Love in this truly amazing RomCom. In a review by Ryan Lattanzio from IndieWire, “After 120 years, give or take, Hollywood finally has a mainstream queer rom-com answer to films like Nora Ephron’s “You’ve Got Mail” and “Sleepless in Seattle.” Hell, it’s taken just as long to make a mainstream LGBTQ movie that isn’t about pain and suffering or trauma or systemic homophobia.
Bros is brilliant with a script that is so smart & hilarious that it will require multiple viewings in order to catch all of the jokes. Nicholas Stoller’s best film since Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Billy Eichner needs to start writing the sequel right now. #BrosMovie #TIFF22 pic.twitter.com/ZRhO09DTE8

But, once Josh Primm (Winslow Fegley) befriends Lyle (Shawn Mendes) the pair embark on their own unique musical adventures through New York.

The Banshees of Inisherin
How would you respond to the notion of losing your best friend without any warning? Would you fight to win them back? Would you continue to figure out what happened to suddenly make the other turn on you? Or, would you simply walk away and accept the loss? This is the dilemma that Padraic (Colin Farrell) finds himself in this new drama. Guy Loge from Variety says that, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” is a film that traces the tortured breakup between two best pals in remote rural Ireland with all the anguish and gravity of the most charged romantic melodrama — its high, unleashed emotions all the more startling in a world where men don’t speak their feelings.
THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN might be, pound for pound, the feckin funniest movie of the year. Weird, unassuming, feckin charming. Colin Farrell is all heart, a beautiful performance. Barry Keoghan, the sweetest performance. Gorgeously feckin shot and scored. #TIFF22 pic.twitter.com/uSML1yhpPO

Call Jane
Flash back to Chicago 1968 as the city and country are faced with political chaos. Elizabeth Banks plays Joy, a suburban housewife who leads an ordinary life with her husband and daughter. When Joy’s pregnancy causes a life-threatening condition, she is surrounded by all-male doctors, unwilling to end her pregnancy. However, she meets a group 2 women, independent visionary doctor Virginia (Sigourney Weaver) and activist Gwen (Wunmi Mosaku), who work to champion the right to an abortion. In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, writer Sheri Linden calls Call Jane, “A bracing and intimate view of a historical moment that’s less distant than we might think. Call Jane is the story of a fictional character’s life-changing involvement in the Jane Collective, an underground service that provided safe abortions for women when they were still illegal.”
Call Jane is a solid outing from Phyllis Nagy. She tells an important story & commands some really effective scenes. Banks & Weaver are great. The movie cruises along & doesn’t quite take off to a new level, but it does deliver a nice, feel-good mark. #CallJane #Sundance2022 pic.twitter.com/lPut3kjCVW

This star-studded movie cast includes the likes of Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, Anya Taylor Joy, Michael B. Jordan, John David Washington, and Taylor Swift. We follow 3 friends of different work titles, doctor, nurse, and attorney, who become prime suspects in a murder in the 1930s. Will this be one of your comedy movie choices at the movies this year?
Unrelated, Amsterdam looks like it’s gonna be a good movie.

Babylon
Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, and Tobey Maguire flash back to the 1920s in the comedy drama epic Babylon. The movie follows the shift from silent films to talkies. In the trailer we see the glitz and the glam of the ’20s in Hollywood. Simultaneously, we observe the shift of films that defined a century. This comedy movie has got everything, parties, humor, and stars from around the globe.
DAMN! We just watched the first trailer for #Babylon, which looks huge. Opens on Margot Robbie snorting up the Paramount logo & then it takes off. Dancing, music, violence, drugs, nudity, cursing, movie-making. It looks huge. The biggest thing Chazelle has ever done. Can’t wait! pic.twitter.com/K05UmhhdHG
