The Wiz Aims for Broadway with 2024 Revival

There’s no place like home as The Wiz returns to Broadway in 2024. The Tony-winning musical based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will return to Broadway as a reimagined revival in Spring 2024.

Many fans have been waiting for this moment for a long time and are excited for the return of The Wiz. Soon, audiences old and new will get the opportunity to see this award-winning musical live on Broadway.

The revival will start in Baltimore in spring 2024 and then going for a limited engagement run.

The Legacy of The Wiz

The Wiz  is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. With original musical was written by William F. Brown with music and lyrics written by Charlie Smalls. In this musical adaptation, the story of Oz celebrates and showcases African American culture front and center. The music features a mix of rock, gospel and soul music. In 1974, The Wiz opened at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore.

The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Since then, there have been several  revivals in New York, London, San Diego, and the Netherlands.

A big-budget film adaptation of the same name 1978 starring big names such as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Nipsey Russell. Also, Ted Ross and Mabel King reprised their roles.

Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker Join Producing Team

Husband-and-wife team Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker have joined the producing team for the upcoming Broadway-bound touring revival of The Wiz, set to launch at Baltimore, Maryland’s Hippodrome Theatre September 26.

Burruss and Tucker have added their names to a producer list that also includes Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, Brian Anthony Moreland, and Ambassador Theatre Group. This revival will also serve as a directorial debut by Schele Williams.

While some may only know Burruss as a TV personality or as a member of the musical trio Xscape, this is not her first rodeo as a Broadway producer. She and her husband served as producers on Broadway’s 2023 Tony-nominated revival of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson and Keenan Scott II’s Thoughts of a Colored Man.

Todd Tucker has a long history of behind the scenes work. He rose upt he ranks as a production manager and producer. Most notably, he worked on Thinner , Run’s House , and Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes. Burruss me Tucker while filming The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Tucker served as a line producer for the Bravo series.

Amber Ruffin Set to Create New Material for 2024 Revival

Amber Ruffin is attached to provide additional material for the limited engagement. Fans may know Amber Ruffin as she co-wrote Some Like It Hot with Matthew López that is up for Tony nominations this year. In Some Like It Hot, she also modernized a classic for a modern audience.

With Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker joining as producers and Amber Ruffin providing new material, the production is bringing so much to the 2024 revival of the Wiz. Even hardcore fans will have something brand new to see in the revival. It’s sure to be a stand out show when it opens in spring 2024.
